Fort Velasco Timeline Circle

The current Fort Velasco Timeline Circle approximates the size and the location of the original 1832 Fort Velasco. The inner walls are covered with murals that tell the story of the Karankawa, the first people; the early days of the colony created by Moses Austin and later led by Steven F. Austin; the 1832 Battle of Velasco; and the signing of the Treaties of Velasco.

Over the years, Fort Velasco has taken many shapes and locations. The first Fort Velasco was built during the Mexican Republic (1830 – 1835); the second was modified and maintained during the Texas Revolution and Republic Period (1835–1845); and the third and fourth Forts Velasco were established during the American Civil War Period (1846-1865).

In 2020, the non-profit Cradle of Texas Conservancy contracted with Cultural Resources Analaysts, Inc., to conduct a geophysical investigation of a portion of the Old Velasco site in Surfside Beach. The fieldwork involved ground-penetrating radar, magnetic gradiometry, and electric resistance. The report issued on August 23, 2021 found evidence of the exact location of the 1832 Fort Velasco (#1), and some portion of the 1863 Fort Velasco (#4). The full  remote-sensing survey is available from the online library Index of Texas Archaeology.
